Verdict

An 85 mm-equivalent f/1.4 autofocus portrait prime for around 239 dollars, sharing its barrel, filter thread and stepping motor with the 33mm. The cheapest credible route to shallow depth of field at portrait distance on X mount.

Photographers who want a fast portrait prime and cannot justify the XF 56mm F1.2 R, especially as half of a two-lens Viltrox kit.

In detail

The Viltrox AF 56mm f/1.4 XF is the portrait half of the pair, and the same argument applies: an 85 mm-equivalent f/1.4 autofocus prime for around 239 dollars, against roughly four times that for Fujifilm's XF 56mm F1.2 R. It became available in September 2020.

The design is ten elements in nine groups with one ED and one high-refractive-index element, a nine-blade diaphragm, a 52 mm filter thread, and the same 65 x 72 mm barrel as the 33mm — 290g rather than 270g. Minimum focus is 0.60 m for a 0.1x ratio, and the angle of view is 28 degrees.

At 85 mm-equivalent and f/1.4 on APS-C, the lens does what a portrait prime is bought to do: it separates a face from a background cleanly at conversational distance, and it does it at an aperture that keeps ISO down indoors. Stepping-motor autofocus is quick and quiet in single-shot mode, which is how portraits get taken.

Like the 33mm it carries a clickless, unmarked aperture ring and a USB port for firmware. It is the same lens philosophy at a different focal length, and the same caveats about long-term X-mount support apply.

f/1.4 at 85 mm-equivalent for 239 dollars is the whole pitch, and there is no native equivalent at anything like the price. The depth of field at portrait distance is genuinely shallow, and the nine-blade diaphragm keeps the out-of-focus rendering smooth rather than nervous.

Centre sharpness at f/1.4 is high enough for eyes to be crisp at typical portrait distances, and the lens tidies up across the frame by f/2. The ED element keeps longitudinal colour fringing on bright edges lower than the price suggests, which matters at 85 mm-equivalent where highlights behind a subject are constant.

The barrel matches the 33mm exactly — same diameter, same length, same 52 mm filters — so a two-lens Viltrox kit shares filters, caps, and pouches, and swaps without rebalancing the camera.

Trade-offs

  • 0.60 m minimum focus is long; tight head-and-shoulders framing is out of reach.
  • Clickless, unmarked aperture ring.
  • No weather sealing and no stabilization, at a focal length that punishes both.
  • Stepping-motor AF acquires quickly but is not built for continuous tracking.

0.60 m minimum focus is the longest of the three Viltrox primes here and it constrains tight head-and-shoulders work. Backing up to 0.6 m at 85 mm-equivalent gives you a half-length portrait, not a face filling the frame.

The clickless unmarked aperture ring is the same irritation as on the 33mm, and there is no weather sealing and no stabilization. On a body without IBIS, 85 mm-equivalent at slow shutter speeds is unforgiving.

Autofocus is stepping-motor, so it is quick to acquire but not built for tracking a moving subject continuously. And the same firmware-and-support caveat applies: X-mount availability from Viltrox has been inconsistent, so future-body compatibility depends on the company continuing to care.

Who is this for

The Viltrox AF 56mm f/1.4 XF is for photographers who want a fast portrait prime and cannot justify Fujifilm's XF 56mm F1.2 R. It covers portraits, details, and available-light work at a focal length that flatters faces, and it autofocuses well enough that you are not fighting it.

It also makes sense as half of a cheap two-prime kit alongside the 33mm — a 50 mm and an 85 mm-equivalent, both f/1.4, both sharing filters, for less than one native fast prime.

It is the wrong lens for tight close-up portraits, for weather, and for anyone who needs continuous autofocus on moving subjects. The XF 56mm F1.2 R gives you two-thirds of a stop, better close focus, and Fujifilm's own support; the XF 50mm F2 R WR gives you sealing and speed in a much smaller barrel.
