Why I prefer Fujifilm APS-C over GFX medium format

APS-C vs GFX medium format: deeper depth of field, faster glass, more reach, half the weight, a third of the price. Why I kept the X system after shooting a GFX.

Every few months someone looks at my camera bag and asks the same question. "So when are you moving to GFX?" It is a fair thing to ask. Fujifilm is the only company selling affordable digital medium format, the files everyone posts from a GFX 100 look gorgeous, and the used 50S bodies have drifted down to the price of a nice X body with a lens. So I did the research properly, the way I do before any camera purchase: spec sheets, equivalence maths, and a lot of reading from people who own both systems. I came out of it still using an X-T5 and an X-E5, and I want to explain why that was not a budget decision.

Most of the APS-C versus medium format arguments online are about image quality, and image quality is the part where GFX genuinely wins. What nobody mentions is that a big sensor also takes things away from you. Some of what it takes is obvious, like money and weight. Some of it is less obvious, like depth of field, reach, and the ability to hand-hold a silent shutter. Once you add up what you give away, the picture changes.

Depth of field is a resource, and APS-C gives you more of it

Everybody talks about shallow depth of field as the thing you want more of. That is true for portraits. It is the opposite of true for almost everything else, and this is the point that gets lost in every forum thread about the medium format look.

The maths is simple. APS-C has a crop factor of 1.5. The GFX sensor has a crop factor of 0.79. At the same framing, an APS-C camera at f/5.6 gives you the same depth of field a GFX needs f/11 to reach. That is roughly a stop and a half. To get the same street scene or the same landscape sharp front to back, the GFX has to sit a stop and a half slower on the shutter, or a stop and a half higher on the ISO, and the sensor advantage it started with gets handed straight back.

In practice that means zone focusing on a 23mm at f/8 and knowing everything from two metres to infinity is sharp. It means shooting a group of six people at a wedding and not having to worry which row is in focus. It means macro work where you already fight for every millimetre of depth. It means handheld landscapes at dusk without a tripod. None of that is a compromise I am tolerating. It is a feature I actively use.

The fast glass is on the APS-C side

This surprises people. Fujifilm makes twenty-odd GF lenses, and exactly two of them open wider than f/2: the GF 55mm f/1.7 and the GF 80mm f/1.7. One more, the GF 110mm f/2, gets close. Everything else in the GF lineup is f/2.8, f/4, or slower. The zooms are all f/4 or worse. There is no fast GF wide angle and no fast GF zoom, and there is very little third-party autofocus glass to fill the gaps.

Now put those numbers in the same units. The GF 110mm f/2 works out to an 87mm view at an equivalent aperture of about f/1.6 in full-frame terms. That is the shallowest portrait rendering the GFX system offers, and it costs around $2,500 and weighs 1,010g. On X mount, the XF 50mm f/1.0 gives a 76mm view at an equivalent f/1.5. Slightly shallower, in a 845g lens that costs about $1,500. The XF 56mm f/1.2 lands at 84mm and an equivalent f/1.8, which is about a third of a stop behind the GF 110, in a 445g lens for under a thousand dollars.

So the famous medium format separation, at the focal length people actually buy medium format for, is a third of a stop. You can spend the difference on a plane ticket.

Look at the two fixed-lens compacts side by side

The clearest version of this argument is the GFX100RF against the X100VI, because they are the same idea in two sensor sizes. The GFX100RF is 735g with a fixed 35mm f/4, which is a 28mm view at an equivalent f/3.2, and it has no in-body stabilisation. The X100VI is 521g with a fixed 23mm f/2, which is a 35mm view at an equivalent f/3, and it does have IBIS.

Read that again. The APS-C compact has a slightly wider equivalent aperture, is 214g lighter, and adds stabilisation the medium format one does not have. The GFX100RF lists at $4,899. The X100VI lists at $1,599. You are paying an extra $3,300 for resolution and dynamic range, and giving up light-gathering, stabilisation, and a third of the weight to get it. For landscape work on a tripod, that trade can absolutely be worth it. For the walk-around camera the X100 series was designed to be, I do not think it is close.

Reach is free on a crop sensor and very expensive on GFX

The same crop factor that costs you shallow depth of field pays you back at the long end. The XF 150-600mm covers a 229-914mm equivalent range, weighs 1,605g, and sells for around $2,000. The longest lens in the entire GF lineup is the GF 500mm f/5.6, which lands at a 395mm equivalent view, weighs 1,375g, and costs around $3,500. Nearly twice the money for less than half the reach.

If you shoot birds, wildlife, motorsport, or your kid's football matches, medium format is not a system you can buy into. There is no version of the GFX kit that solves this. Macro is the same story: the XF 80mm f/2.8 goes to full 1:1 magnification, while the GF 120mm macro tops out at 1:2, and it has less depth of field to work with at every magnification.

Speed, and the silent shutter problem nobody mentions

The GFX 100 II shoots 8fps. The GFX 100S II shoots 7. The 50S II, still the cheapest way in, manages 3fps on contrast-detect autofocus. The X-T5 does 15fps and the X-H2S does 40fps with an electronic shutter, on the same X-Processor 5 subject detection you get in the GFX bodies. Autofocus on GFX has improved a lot, but every long-term owner I have read says the same thing: it is fine for landscapes and studio portraits, and you should not trust it with a toddler.

The detail that stopped me cold was the electronic shutter. The GFX sensor reads out slowly enough that handheld silent shooting produces visible skew, and owners on r/fujifilm list it as their biggest surprise after buying in. On an X body I use the silent shutter constantly, in museums, in quiet ceremonies, in cafes. Losing it would change how I shoot far more than gaining fifteen megapixels would.

Weight is a tax you pay every day, not once

An X-T5 is 557g. An X-E5 is 445g. The GFX 100S II is 883g before you put a lens on it, and the GFX 100 II is over a kilogram. The lens difference is worse than the body difference: the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 II is 410g, while the GF 32-64mm f/4 that covers roughly the same range is 875g and a stop slower. A two-lens X kit fits in a small sling and disappears on a long day out. The equivalent GFX kit needs a proper bag, a sturdier tripod, and a decision every morning about whether you are really going to carry it.

I know how this ends, because I have owned heavy cameras before. The camera you leave at home has an effective resolution of zero.

The 100MP files cost you a second time

A 102MP raw file is not a free upgrade. You need faster cards, more storage, and a computer that can push those files around in Lightroom without stalling. This comes up in nearly every GFX thread on Reddit, usually from someone who budgeted for the body and the lens and forgot about everything downstream. My X-T5 files are 40MP, which is already more than I need for anything I print, and my four-year-old laptop edits them without complaint.

There is a related point about how much of that resolution you can actually use. To match APS-C depth of field, the GFX has to stop down about a stop and a half further, and by f/11 or f/16 diffraction is already softening what those extra pixels resolve. The sensor advantage is real at f/4 on a tripod in good light. It is much smaller at f/11 handheld at dusk, which is where a lot of us actually shoot.

The film simulations are identical

This is the part that settled it for me. Classic Chrome, Classic Neg, ACROS, Reala Ace, Nostalgic Neg, Eterna — they are the same simulations on both systems, rendered by the same processor. The thing that made me a Fujifilm shooter in the first place is not locked behind the expensive door. A $1,399 X-T50 and a $7,499 GFX 100 II give you the same colours out of camera. What GFX adds is resolution, dynamic range, and 16-bit files for heavy retouching, which are all real and none of which are the reason I picked Fuji.

Where GFX genuinely beats APS-C

I would be lying if I said the format did not have real advantages, so here they are, from people who shoot both:

  • Detail when you crop. Landscape and architecture shooters describe cropping hard into a 102MP file and still having plenty left. That is not a placebo.
  • Dynamic range and how highlights fall off. Owners keep using the word gradual, and it shows up most in skies, skin, and anything with a slow tonal transition.
  • Files that survive abuse. 16-bit raws take shadow lifts and colour grading that would band on a smaller file. If you retouch commercially, this matters.
  • Big prints. If you print at 40 inches and people walk up close, the extra resolution is visible.
  • Leaf shutter lenses, which sync flash at any speed. Studio and fashion shooters have a real reason to want this.
  • A slower way of working. More than one GFX owner describes the deliberate pace as the point rather than a drawback. That is a legitimate reason to buy a camera.

Notice the pattern. Almost all of those are studio, landscape, architecture, and commercial print. They are jobs where you are on a tripod, working slowly, at a stopped-down aperture, with time to get it right. If that is your work, buy the GFX. It was built for you.

What I actually shoot, and why APS-C fits it

I shoot streets, family, travel, and the occasional portrait for a friend. I shoot handheld, usually at a walking pace, often in bad light, and I want the camera on my shoulder for eight hours without thinking about it. Every single one of those preferences points at the smaller sensor. Deeper depth of field means more keepers. Lighter kit means it comes with me. Faster autofocus means I get the frame. Cheaper glass means I own five lenses instead of two.

The honest version of this argument is not that APS-C is better. It is that sensor size is a set of trade-offs, and the marketing only ever tells you about one side of it. Fujifilm skipped full frame and built the two ends instead, which means the X system is not a budget compromise on the way to GFX. It is the format that suits a completely different way of working, and it happens to be mine.

If you are weighing the same decision, the question to ask is not which sensor is better. It is whether you shoot on a tripod. If you mostly do, GFX will reward you. If you mostly do not, put the money into glass and go somewhere interesting.

For roughly what a GFX 100S II body costs on its own, you can have a body and three or four very good lenses on X mount, with change left over. This is the kit I keep coming back to.
