Start with what does not separate these two, because it is most of the camera. Both use the 40.2 MP X-Trans V sensor and the X-Processor 5, both run ISO 125 to 12800 natively, both do 425 AF points with AI subject detection, both burst at 15 fps, both give 7 stops of IBIS, both are weather sealed, and both take the NP-W235. Photographs from the two are the same photographs. Anyone telling you the X-H2 is the sharper camera is describing a price difference, not a sensor.
Video is where the 300 USD goes
The X-H2 records 8K at 30p; the X-T5 tops out at 6K at 30p. Both write ProRes 422 HQ, H.265 and H.264, and both offer F-Log2. If you are cutting 4K timelines and want the oversampling or the reframing room, 8K is a real tool and the X-H2 is the only one of the two that has it. If you have never once wished for more than 6K, this line item is the entire argument for the more expensive body and it does not apply to you.
Cards, and the one that actually bites
The X-H2 pairs a CFexpress Type B slot with an SD UHS-II slot. The X-T5 has two SD UHS-II slots. CFexpress is what sustains the highest-bitrate video modes, so the two specs are the same decision seen twice: the X-H2 is built to keep writing 8K, the X-T5 is built to mirror stills across two identical cheap cards. For a stills photographer the X-T5's arrangement is the better one, and it is cheaper to feed.
Finder, weight, and what the body is for
The X-H2's EVF is 5.76M dots against the X-T5's 3.69M, and it is the better finder by a clear margin. It also weighs 660g to the X-T5's 557g — a hundred grams, which is a lens's worth on a long day. The X-H2 is a PASM-style body with a deep grip and a top LCD; the X-T5 keeps the shutter speed, ISO and exposure compensation dials. Neither layout is better. They are aimed at different hands, and that is the honest answer to this comparison: pick the one you want to hold.
Battery and price
CIPA has the X-T5 at 580 shots and the X-H2 at 540, off the same battery — the X-H2 spends the difference on the bigger finder. The X-T5 launched at 1,699 USD and the X-H2 at 1,999 USD. Both are current. Unless you need 8K or CFexpress, the X-T5 is the same imaging pipeline for 300 USD less in a lighter body, and that is what most buyers comparing these two should take from it.
