Fujifilm X-H2 pairs a 40.2 MP X-Trans V sensor with 8K/30p ProRes and a 7-stop IBIS unit. At 1999 USD it is the cheaper sibling of the X-H2S by a full 500 USD.

In detail
I have been meaning to write up the X-H2 properly for a while. Most people reach for it because of Fuji's 5th generation X-Trans sensor and the price Fuji launched it at. Released in 2022 at 1,999 USD, the body is still in production. It sits in the X-H line, which is Fuji's hybrid flagship line with deep grips and pro video features.
Out-of-camera JPEGs are a real reason to pick this over the competition. At 40.2 MP, native ISO runs ISO 125 to 12800, plenty for low light with the faster XF primes, the files give you enough room to crop without falling apart. AI subject detection covers people, animals, cars, planes, and a few other categories. It just works. Burst tops out at 15 fps, which is more than enough for most people and a real selling point if you shoot sports or wildlife occasionally.
Video specs are more than capable for short-form and travel work. 8K 30p is on the menu, more marketing headline than daily use. 4K 60p is the more useful spec for actual work.
In the hand it feels like a Fuji, with the usual tight dials, a deep enough grip, and weather sealing for working photographers. IBIS is rated at 7 stops by CIPA, which translates to hand-holding longer lenses at surprisingly slow shutter speeds. It is on the heavier side at 660g with battery and card, so size up your bag accordingly.
Battery life is rated at 540 shots per charge, which is honest. A real day of travel shooting usually needs one spare NP-W235. Two card slots are present (CFexpress Type B and SD UHS-II), so you can shoot with a backup or split RAW/JPEG. Bottom line: this is the X-H body to look at if you want hybrid video and stills with a deep grip without jumping to a flagship.

The headline win is the 40.2 MP X-Trans V sensor, and that is what sells the body. Film simulation count is 8, which is the older but still solid lineup, and the film simulation recipes that have built up around the system are a real reason to choose Fuji over a Sony or Canon in this price band. Dual card slots give event and travel shooters the kind of redundancy that used to require a full-frame body. IBIS is the kind of feature you stop noticing until you go back to a body without it. 8K 30p and 4K 60p cover most hybrid shooters, and the Fuji film simulations translate to video just as well.

The honest trade-off is 15 fps mechanical against 40 fps on the X-H2S, and that gap shows up the day you try to shoot a school sports final. Push the electronic shutter to 20 fps and you are cropping 1.29x for a 24 MP file; full width on the electronic shutter drops you to 13 fps. Rolling shutter is worse than the stacked body's, so fast pans and propellers need the mechanical shutter. It is not a small camera either, at 660g before you put a lens on it.
Who is this for
Landscape, studio and high-resolution hybrid shooters who want 8K and 40 MP in one body. It is a reasonable pick for school sports, weekend wildlife, and any situation where the subject is moving quickly. Landscape and studio shooters who crop a lot will appreciate the resolution headroom. Travel videographers and YouTubers running a one-person crew can absolutely get by with this body.
Image quality
40.2 MP X-Trans V, the highest-resolution APS-C sensor anyone makes, in a body built to hold it steady. Base ISO 125, and the dynamic range at base is the best in Fujifilm's APS-C line.
The resolution is genuinely usable rather than a marketing number. A 40 MP frame survives the kind of crop that turns a 26 MP file into a web image, which in practice means one lens covers framing that used to need two.
Then there is pixel shift. The X-H2 can fire twenty frames while moving the sensor a half pixel at a time and combine them into a 160 MP composite with Fujifilm's Pixel Shift Combiner software. It needs a tripod and a still subject, so it is a studio, architecture and reproduction feature rather than a field one, but nothing else in APS-C offers it.
The cost of 40 MP is the same one the X-T5 pays: your lenses have to keep up. Fujifilm publishes a list of the lenses it considers a match for this sensor, and owners who upgraded on older zooms have repeatedly found the body blamed for what the glass was doing. Per-pixel noise at high ISO is also higher than the 26 MP bodies, and disappears again as soon as you downsample.
Autofocus in practice
The X-H2 launched with a reputation problem and has spent the years since fixing it.
The hardware is 425 phase-detect points and the full X-Processor 5 deep-learning subject set — people, animals, birds, cars, motorcycles, bikes, aircraft, trains — reading out a non-stacked 40 MP sensor. That last part is the constraint: more pixels to read, slower than the stacked X-H2S, and at launch reviewers and owners both put it behind its faster sibling by a clear margin.
Firmware changed the picture more than firmware usually does. The comparison sites that have retested both bodies now put the hit-rate gap at a few percent rather than a category difference, and the most useful owner testimony comes from an X-H2 owner replying to a long thread about Fujifilm autofocus frustration: the current firmware, he wrote, is the best version of this camera's autofocus, with tracking, object detection, face and eye detection and overall hit rate all clearly improved. If you are reading 2022 reviews to make a 2026 decision, you are reading about a different camera.
What it still is not is a 40 fps action body. 15 fps mechanical, 20 fps electronic with a 1.29x crop, 13 fps electronic at full width. For wildlife and sport the X-H2S remains the right tool. For everything else — events, portraits, weddings, travel, landscape — the autofocus is no longer the reason to choose something else.
Video verdict
8K at 30p internally, in ProRes 422 HQ or H.265, with F-Log2 and 4:2:2 10-bit. No other APS-C camera does this, and for a long time no camera near this price did it at all.
The practical value of 8K for most people is not delivering in 8K. It is oversampling to a very clean 4K, and reframing inside the shot in post — a 4K crop out of an 8K frame is a second camera angle you did not have to set up.
Internal ProRes is the X-H line's advantage over the X-T5, which only sends ProRes RAW out over HDMI. Add dual slots with CFexpress Type B, a full-size HDMI connector, a headphone jack, a vari-angle screen and 7 stops of IBIS and you have a body that behaves like a video camera when you need it to.
8K generates heat, and Fujifilm's answer is the FAN-001 cooler that clips onto the back. Long takes in warm rooms need it. Rolling shutter is also more visible than on the stacked X-H2S, so fast pans want care or the mechanical shutter.
What makes this camera special
The X-H2 is the resolution flagship, and it is 500 USD cheaper than the speed flagship it shares a body with.
That is an unusual arrangement, and it is why this camera keeps turning up in buying advice threads as the sensible pick. Identical chassis, identical weather sealing, identical 5.76 million-dot viewfinder, identical dual CFexpress-and-SD slots, identical 7-stop IBIS. What changes is the sensor: 40 MP and 8K here, 26 MP and 40 fps there.
For most working photographers who are not shooting sport, 40 MP and 8K is the more useful pair. Landscape, architecture, product, portrait and commercial work all want resolution far more than they want frame rate, and 160 MP pixel-shift composites extend that further.
The professional body layout is the other half of it — PASM dial, top status LCD, deep grip, battery grip option, full-size HDMI. Fujifilm built the X-H line for people who need their camera to work like every other professional camera, and then put X-Trans colour inside it.
What X-H2 owners actually say
Owner sentiment on the X-H2 has moved a long way since launch, and the reason is firmware.
The launch story was that Fujifilm had shipped two 2,000-dollar-class bodies and the cheaper one focused worse. That was true at the time. The current story, from people running the camera today, is different: the most-quoted testimony on r/fujifilm comes from an X-H2 owner answering a long thread of autofocus complaints, who lists tracking, object detection, face and eye detection and hit rate as all substantially improved by the firmware updates, and describes the camera as being at its best version now. Comparison sites that retested both X-H bodies have narrowed the gap to a few percent.
The other consistent theme is switchers. Threads about moving to Fujifilm from full frame name the X-T5 and the X-H2 more than any other bodies, and the answers are mostly about what people gained rather than what they gave up — one long reply, the top comment in one of those threads, argues that sensor size rarely makes the difference people expect and that enjoying the camera matters more. The dissenters are honest too: at least one returned an X-T5 to Sony over autofocus, which is the same complaint the X-H2's firmware has been chipping away at.
Where owners agree without argument is the resolution and the build. 40 MP with weather sealing, two card slots, a 5.76 million-dot finder and a real grip is a professional package, and the X-H2 undercuts the X-H2S by 500 USD to get there.
The reservations are predictable. It is heavy at 660g. 8K wants CFexpress cards and eventually the FAN-001 cooler. And the PASM dial is still, for a certain kind of Fujifilm owner, the wrong dial on the wrong camera.
