In detail
If you have ever picked up an X-E and thought 'this is the Fuji I want', the X-E4 is the most refined take on that idea.
Take a look at what is going on here. The 26.1 MP X-Trans IV APS-C sensor sits in a 364g body, paired with X-Processor 4. Native ISO is 160 to 12800, and you get 425 hybrid AF points with face and eye detection. 8 fps burst is plenty for travel, family, and most outdoor work, and the 4K 30p with F-Log is honestly more video than most people will use.
The tilting screen flips up for selfies or waist-level framing, and that is the kind of small thing that changes how you shoot on the street.
Now, the build. It is the entry-level Fuji recipe, light and a bit plasticky, no weather sealing and no grip to speak of. There is no in-body stabilization, so for low light or long lenses you lean on stabilized XF glass. At 364g it slips into a coat pocket, which is the whole reason to buy an X-E.
Battery is 380 shots CIPA, carry a spare NP-W126S. Single UHS-I slot. Bottom line: this is the X-E body to get if you want rangefinder style in a small, affordable package without jumping to a flagship.

The headline win is the form factor. 26MP X-Trans IV sensor in a 364g body that you can actually carry everywhere, that is rare. Film simulation count is 7, the older but solid lineup, and Classic Chrome and ACROS alone are worth the price. 4K 30p is more than enough for hybrid shooters, and the Fuji film simulations translate to video beautifully.

The honest trade-off is no IBIS. No in-body stabilization means relying on stabilized lenses, which is fine if you are a primes person, less fine if you want one slow zoom. The EVF at 2.36 million dots is on the lower-resolution side by current standards. The tilting LCD flips up through 180 degrees so it does face forward, but it moves on one axis only, and there is no notch on the top edge to pull it down for overhead shots. No grip means a pancake lens is your friend, or 100 dollars of accessories. Single card slot, fine until the day it isn't.
Who is this for
Travel and street photographers who want a slim rangefinder-style body over the X-T30 II. Run-and-gun YouTubers can get by with it. At 364g it makes a great second body, and as a daily-carry it is hard to beat if you are okay with the fixed-lens mentality of a single focal length workflow.
Image quality
The sensor is the whole argument for this camera. 26.1 MP X-Trans IV behind X-Processor 4, the same pairing Fujifilm shipped in the X-T4, the X-Pro3 and the X-S10, which means the files coming off a 364g body are the files coming off bodies that cost a lot more in 2021. Digital Camera World's lab results put its resolution and dynamic range level with the X-T4. That is the honest way to read the X-E4: a flagship sensor with the flagship taken away from around it.
Native ISO runs 160 to 12800. I have been shooting mine since March 2022 and the ceiling I actually work to is about 3200, with 6400 kept for frames I would otherwise not get at all. Below 1600 there is nothing to talk about.
26 MP is enough resolution and not a gram more. It prints big and it crops a little. If you frame loose and fix it later, the 40 MP in the X-E5 changes what you can do and this camera does not.
Colour is the part that keeps people. Seven film simulations including Classic Chrome, Classic Neg. and ACROS, and the X-E4 sets people post to r/fujifilm are overwhelmingly straight-out-of-camera JPEGs shot on community recipes rather than raw files run through Lightroom. The camera is good enough at JPEG that a lot of owners quietly stopped editing, which is worth more on an ordinary Tuesday than two extra stops of highlight recovery.
Photos shot on the X-E4
We shot and published 81 frames on the X-E4, March 2022 to November 2025. The 24 below are spread evenly across that period. Autofocus in practice
425 phase-detect points across most of the frame, face and eye detection, and nothing beyond that. No animal detection, no vehicle detection. DPReview marked both against it at the time, along with tracking that trailed the Sony and Canon bodies at the same price.
For the work this camera gets bought for, that ceiling rarely shows up. Single-shot AF on a static subject in daylight is fast and quiet, face detection holds a cooperative portrait, and zone-focused street work at f/8 barely troubles the system.
Point it at a child running toward you and the gap opens. An X-E4 owner on r/fujifilm laid the case out while weighing the X-E5: they had no complaint about image quality, they reached for this body specifically when they wanted quick, dependable autofocus and metering, and those were the two things they found least dependable. X-Processor 5 subject detection is a generation ahead and does fix it. On the X-E4 you learn to pre-focus, shoot single point, and stop asking the camera to guess.
One workflow detail catches every X-E3 owner who moves across: the front focus-mode switch is gone. Single, continuous and manual now live in the menu, so put AF mode on the Q menu or into a custom setting before the day you need it in a hurry.
Video verdict
4K at 30p, oversampled from a 6K readout, in H.265 or H.264, with F-Log if you plan to grade. For a 2021 body at this price that is a complete feature set, and it is more video than most X-E4 owners will ever shoot.
The missing piece is stabilisation. No IBIS and no digital IS worth the name, so handheld footage wobbles unless you are on a stabilised zoom or standing very still. The workaround is the one every serious X-E4 video post ends up describing: a tripod, a variable ND, manual exposure at 1/48, and framing that does not need to move. One of those posts, shot entirely on an X-E4 with the XF 27mm F2.8 R WR, did well enough on r/fujifilm that the comments turned into a settings thread.
The screen tilts up through 180 degrees, so it does face forward for a talking head, and at 364g the camera sits on a small tripod without argument. What you do not get is a fully articulating panel. Shoot a vertical clip and you are composing off a screen that is edge-on to you.
What makes this camera special
What makes the X-E4 interesting is what Fujifilm took out of it. Against the X-E3 it lost the rear command dial, the front focus-mode switch and the small moulded grip, and it gained a screen that flips up through 180 degrees. That is the whole design brief: a flat metal rectangle with a shutter speed dial, an exposure compensation dial, one front command wheel, and an aperture ring on whatever lens you hang off the front.
Jonas Rask, who has been handed Fujifilm prototypes for years, was blunt about the cost of that in his first look. The back wheel went and was not really replaced with anything, and the body came out, in his words, completely brick shaped. He also passed on Fujifilm's reasoning about the grip: rather than mould a half-hearted bump into the front plate, they would sell a real one, the MHG-XE4, to the people who want it.
You can read that as accessory pricing dressed up as philosophy, and plenty of people did. You can also shoot the camera for an afternoon and find that a body with nothing on the front is the one that goes into a jacket pocket and comes back out on a street without anybody looking twice. Both readings are correct, which is why this camera argues with itself in every thread it turns up in.
What X-E4 owners actually say
Reviewers were lukewarm on the X-E4 in 2021 and the people who bought one have been defending it ever since. That gap is the most useful thing you can know before spending money on it.
The clearest version of the defence came from a Sony A7 III shooter who posted a rant to r/fujifilm after a six-hour street session, arguing that the nit-picking reviews miss the point of the camera. Their case: it is genuinely small in every dimension, it disappears on the street with a pancake on it, the top and bottom plates are magnesium, and you can drive the whole exposure triangle from the shutter dial, the aperture ring and the front wheel without touching a menu. The top reply called it an interchangeable-lens X100, which is the description that follows this body around.
When somebody asked r/fujifilm outright whether the X-E4 is as mediocre as the written reviews made it sound, the top answer was that there is nothing mediocre about it — Fujifilm changed the design philosophy for this model, and that is where the resentment comes from. Not ergonomic, that reply said, but sleek.
Owners do complain, and mostly about things no review mentions. The tilting screen has a notch to pull it up and no notch to pull it down, so overhead shots are fiddly. The one command wheel is on the front, where a lot of people think it belongs on the back. The plates are magnesium but the mid-section behind the leatherette is plastic. Paint on the silver top plate scuffs, and more than one owner has said so unprompted. The eye sensor is sensitive enough that waist-level shooting can throw you back into the viewfinder mid-frame. And comfortable one-handed use means buying the thumb rest: Tom England, eighteen months in, paid about 100 Canadian dollars for his and still called the X-E4 one of the best camera purchases he has ever made.
The X-E5 has split the same crowd. Some upgraders say the IBIS and the improved dynamic range settle it. Another sold the X-E4, missed the light body and the ISO dial badly enough to think about buying it back, and one owner finds the X-E5 clunky by comparison and says so knowing it is an unpopular opinion. Meanwhile a near-new X-E4 with an XF 27mm F2.8 R WR for 675 euros drew fifty comments on r/fujifilm, nearly all of them a version of buy it before somebody else does.
Is the X-E4 still worth buying?
The X-E4 is a used purchase now and has been for years. PetaPixel noticed in March 2023, barely two years after launch, that B&H and Adorama had both flipped their listings to discontinued while Fujifilm's own product page stayed up. Fujifilm declined to comment. There was never an announcement.
What replaced it changes the maths. The X-E5 arrived in 2025 at 1,699 USD against the X-E4's 849 USD launch price, and it brings IBIS, a 40 MP X-Trans V sensor and a film simulation dial. It is the better camera by any measure you like. It is also double the money, and the used X-E4 market has never really softened, partly because everyone who wanted an X100V and could not find one at a sane price landed here instead.
Buy an X-E4 if what you want is the lightest interchangeable-lens Fujifilm body with a viewfinder in it, you shoot primes, and 26 MP is enough for your prints. Buy the X-E5 if you want stabilisation for video or dim light, or the resolution to crop into. Buy an X-T30 II if you would trade the rangefinder shape for a rear command dial and a lower price. And if you were only ever going to bolt a 23mm lens on and leave it there, the X100V is the camera you actually want, weather-sealed and with a leaf shutter, at whatever the used market is charging this month.
On condition, three things. The silver top plate marks easily, so look at it in person if the finish matters. Work the tilt hinge through its full travel. Check the battery and port doors, which are the flimsiest parts of the body and the complaint owners reach for once they are done complaining about the paint.
